God our father,
we are gathered here to share in the supper
which your only Son left to his Church to reveal his love.
He gave it to us when he was about to die
and commanded us to celebrate it as the new and eternal sacrifice.
We pray that in this eucharist
we may find the fullness of love and life.
O God, who have called us to participate
in this most sacred Supper,
in which your Only Begotten Son,
when about to hand himself over to death,
entrusted to the Church a sacrifice new for all eternity,
the banquet of his love,
grant, we pray,
that we may draw from so great a mystery,
the fullness of charity and of life.
we receive new life
from the supper your Son gave us in this world.
May we find full contentment
in the meal we hope to share in the your eternal kingdom.
Grant, almighty God,
that, just as we are renewed
by the Supper of your Son in this present age,
so we may enjoy his banquet for all eternity.
Note: In the forthcoming Missal, the use of “sacred supper,” “banquet of love,” “supper of your Son,” and the elimination of the word “meal” obviously changes the character of the message here.
