Domican chants for Compline

Br. Innocent Smith, O.P., explains how the Dominican liturgy preserves many ancient chants that are sung during Lent and Passion-tide. These chants present beautiful articulations of Christian teachings on death, suffering, dependence on God’s mercy, and Christ’s protection of His people. This presentation includes the singing of several Latin chants, and offers an exposition of their history, influence, and theological meaning. This talk took place at Saint Joseph’s Church, in Greenwich Villiage, as part of the “Passion of Christ” Conference given by our brothers at the Dominican House of Studies. Michael G. Benoit and Paul Rhodes from Saint Joseph’s Choir sing the chants with Br. Innocent Smith, O.P.
